International Cadet
The International Cadet is a double-handed sailing dinghy (which means it takes two people to sail it) designed specifically for young sailors aged 7 to 17. With its unique blend of performance and accessibility, the Cadet offers an ideal entry point into the world of competitive sailing. The boat is small and manageable, yet robust enough to provide a fast and exciting sailing experience.
The International Cadet class is sailed in over 20 countries around the world, providing young sailors with numerous opportunities to compete and connect with peers globally (Sailors who qualify at the National Championship have the chance to represent Australia at the annual World Championship).
Based at Sandy Bay Sailing Club, Fleet V is the local cadet sailing organisation. With more than 20 children sailing cadets, we are a large, fun and active group. Whether you know anything about sailing or not (many of us are new to this!) we look forward to welcoming you to the Cadet family.
For Experienced and Novice Sailors Alike
Whether your child is a complete novice or has sailing experience, Cadets offer a fun and exciting way to develop their sailing skills while building character, camaraderie, and a lifelong love for the sport.
In the boat, there is a ‘Helm’ who is generally the older, more experienced child. New Helms generally have some experience w/ sailing. Then there is the ‘Crew.’ This is the younger child who assists the Helm. Although it’s helpful to have completed the Tackers programme, it’s by no means required to have sailing experience.
